Well, Edward VIII was very likely a Nazi sympathizer, and as such was essentially exiled to the Bahamas for the duration, and afterward retired to live in France. His successor, George VI, was a far better choice to prosecute the war.

Interestingly the grumpy looking naval officer in the first circular picture was the first husband of Wallis Simpson . . the same lady who caused King Edward VIII to abdicate the English Throne, and become the Prince of Wales.
 What would WWII be like if he stayed on?
