When George complained that “all I ever wanted to be was a naval officer..” one of his aides told him that he’d had the best training there is for being the monarch, being a naval officer.

 

Or so the story goes.

 

He certainly was the better man for the job.

Well, Edward VIII was very likely a Nazi sympathizer, and as such was essentially exiled to the Bahamas for the duration, and afterward retired to live in France. His successor, George VI, was a far better choice to prosecute the war.

Interestingly the grumpy looking naval officer in the first circular picture was the first husband of Wallis Simpson . . the same lady who caused King Edward VIII to abdicate the English Throne, and become the Prince of Wales. What would WWII be like if he stayed on?

Oh, those American women!
