CAPT Joseph “King” Deutsch, USN (Ret.)
Joseph King Deutsch, Captain, U.S. Navy (Retired), 88, of San Diego, California, passed away peacefully on August 14, leaving a legacy of extraordinary achievement, steadfast service, and deep devotion to family and friends.
Born in St. Louis, “King” displayed early signs of the discipline, work ethic, and teamwork that would guide his life. In June 1955, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an Airman Recruit, beginning a journey that would see him rise through every enlisted and officer rank to attain the rare and distinguished rank of Captain. Over 38 years of service, he excelled in diverse and demanding assignments across the Pacific and beyond, with his final tour at Naval Air Systems Command Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
After retiring from active duty, King remained committed to service. He led human resources for a local technology company, served as president of the Optimist Club, contributed more than 25 years to the USO, umpired Little League baseball, and was a leader of the Celebration of Champions for Rady Children’s Hospital. For two decades, he also welcomed visitors as a docent aboard the USS Midway Museum – a ship on which he proudly served – sharing his knowledge, pride, and love for San Diego and naval history.
King’s life was defined not only by his professional excellence but by his exemplary character–marked by loyalty, intelligence, dependability, humor, generosity, and his Catholic faith. Above all, he was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, cherished brother, and trusted friend. He is survived by his best friend and exemplary Navy wife of 67 years, Genevieve Della Rosa Deutsch; sons Jon (Kathleen, children Jack and Max) and Eric (Cindy, children Ryan and Riley); brother Thomas; sisters Mary Anne and Madeleine; nieces and nephews, and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by his guidance and warmth. He was predeceased by his parents, Narri King and Joseph E. Deutsch, and his sister, Sister Elizabeth Deutsch, CSJ.
In keeping with his wishes, his body was donated to UCSD Medical School. A memorial service will be held aboard the USS Midway on November 1, 2025 at 1pm.
