The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting
The SILVER STAR MEDAL to
Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class Robert Daniel Hunt, United States Navy
For service as set forth in the following
CITATION

“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving in armed conflict against the
North Vietnamese and Communist .aggressors in An Xuyen Province, Republic of Vietnam. On 6
June 1969 while .acting as door gunner on an OH-6 helicopter, Petty Officer HUNT was involved
in a SEA LORDS operation on the Cai Nuoc River. After RF/PF troops had successfully swept
the area, the helicopters closed in to assess the damage and seek out enemy evaders. Upon
reaching the objective area the helicopter came under a heavy cross fire attack fro1:n two heavily
fortified positions. Without hesitation Petty Officer HUNT began returning extremely accurate
and concentrated suppressive fire. He was hit by two AK-4·7 rounds, one of which plunged deep
into his abdomen. · He was driven backwards by the impact into the helicopter floor, quickly
recovered, and without regard for his personal safety began returning a devastating hail of fire
which killed· two Viet Cong and grounded two others. While the helicopter was climbing to
safety, he continued his expert suppressive fire, assuring the safe exit of the helicopter. Petty
Officer HUNT’s calm professionalism and courageous performance were in keeping with the
highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”
