LCDR Richard M. “Dick” Shand, USN

 

ENS Shand became a Naval Aviator on February 19, 1958 at HTG-1, NAS Ellyson Field, Pensacola, Florida.  ENS Shand was Navy Helicopter Pilot Designator Number R-3958.

LCDR Richard M Shand, USN was killed in a Navy helicopter mishap on the Pacific Missile Range, NAS Point Magu, Ca on November 23, 1973. Mishap date was November 23, 1973 and formal declaration of death was November 26, 1973.

LCDR Shand was a hero staying with his Helicopter so that his copilot and 3 aircrewman could successfully bail out and survive. The mishap story was written up by the copilot, LT Michael Delorey, USN in a Approach Magazine Article in July 1974. Part #1 and Part #2
