History of HS-9 Sea Griffins
On I June 1956, the Navy’s first all weather helicopter squadron was established at NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island as Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron NINE (HS-9). After twelve years of dedicated service to the fleet, HS-9 was disestablished in October 1968. On 4 June 1976 the Sea Griffins were called back to duty as HS-9 was re-established at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida. The squadron was disestablished on 23 April, 1993.
Helicopters have been a vital part our US Naval forces. With the introduction of helicopters the 101st Airborne division started deploying into battle mainly from helicopters as opposed to airplanes. An the helicopter patches are a representation of HS-9 squadron missions and deployments.
